EpicLife Podcast Update – A Slight Delay, But Not a Detour Hey folks, Scotty Roberts here! I’ve got an important update about the EpicLife Podcast launch, and while I hate to push it back again, I promise there’s a good reason—and a silver lining. As many of you know, I’ve been dealing with some unexpected health hurdles since Christmas, when I landed in the ER with the flu. In an effort to keep me breathing, the medical team intubated me and put me on a ventilator—which may have saved my life, but in the process, they also did a number on my vocal cords and trachea. Fast forward a couple of months: my voice is back (nearly at full power), but my breathing is another story. Scar tissue has built up, tightening my windpipe like a clogged drinking straw, making it tough to get through full sentences without gasping for air. The official name for this little gift? Tracheal stenosis. What’s Next? The good news is, the solution is on the horizon. I’m scheduled for surgery on April 9th—a Bronchoscopic Tracheal Dilation—which should fix the problem and get me back to breathing (and talking) like my old self. What About the Podcast? That brings me to the next point: EpicLife’s launch is moving once again. I know, I know—I’m beginning to feel like one of those bands that keeps delaying their tour. But trust me, this is only a detour, not a derailment. The show is coming, and when it does, it’ll be stronger than ever. In the meantime, I’ll still be popping in with updates and keeping the conversation going. Hey, Folks! A little long-ish, but you're used to that with me... Okay... here is what the Doc said about my throat, which - as you know if you've followed my EpicLife posts - started back on Christmas Day when the ER at the Hudson hospital intubated me and placed me on a ventilator due to shortness of breath caused by the flu-devoloping-to-pneumonia - of which I do not recall giving permission, nor of which I have any memory at all. As a matter of fact, I remember being nearly perfectly healthy on Christmas morning, despite a cough and what I thought were burgeoning cold symptoms. I, apparently, was not not breathing well, and Raini took me to the Emergency Room. I have no memory of this, either. Flynn had to help her get me to the car, I learned later. The very first memory I have of that hospital stay was a couple of days later, when I heard the door open and my son Sam entered my room. He came to read for me. I am pretty sure it was "Lord of the Rings," or "The Hobbit." I am a little hazy on all that stuff. Well, as I have mentioned in past posts, the tubes they put down my throat damaged my vocal cords, leaving me unable to speak above a whisper for a few weeks. My speech is now almost fully recovered, but the damage to my vocal cords and trachea have left a layer of scar tissue, effectively narrowing my airway, resulting in difficulty breathing. My oxygen is near perfect, but my ability to speak and breath normally has been greatly curtailed. There is no immediate threat to life and limb, but the constant deep breathing and narrowed airway has me quite fatigued and mentally claustrophobic. My ability to work is intact, but my physical endurance gets worn to a heavy breathing nub in fairly short order. I saw the Nose-Ear-Throat specialist two days ago, and they said this will not get any worse, but that it will also "never get any better on it's own." Scar tissue, y'know. I meet with NET surgeon early next week, and they are going to start the process to performing a surgery that will expand my trachea with a really cool balloon animal trick - kinda like doing an angioplasty on my throat - stretching my windpipe open. To address a narrowed trachea (tracheal stenosis), a procedure called "endoscopic balloon dilation" involves inserting a catheter with a balloon into the trachea, inflating the balloon to stretch the narrowed area, and then deflating and removing the catheter. I guess the tissue of the trachea is supposed to hold in place, otherwise it would be a pointless venture. And, WALLAH - I should be back to breathing normally, again! + + + + + + + + + + For all of you who work in the medical fields, this is the precise, overtly wordy diagnosis that was made after the CT scan of my neck earlier this week... – IMPRESSION: Right vocal cord dysfunction with 270 degrees rind of presumed endotracheal granulation tissue at the lower cervical esophagus. Resulting moderate endotracheal luminal stenosis at the lower cervical esophagus is seen. Direct endoscopic visualization of the trachea for further assessment would be helpful. – Incidental 8 x 12 x 22 mm ovoid soft tissue at the right tracheoesophageal groove, in the expected region of the parathyroid. Secondary consideration of incidental deep visceral lymph node. Recommend biochemical correlation for calcium dysregulation, which if present would suggest a parathyroid adenoma. The NET specialists confirmed all of this by running a tiny camera up through my nostril and down to my vocal cords and trachea. + + + + + + + + + + I have become thoroughly convinced that had I lived during the eighteenth century - or any time prior - I would be dead five times over due to all the things that have happened to me over the last ten years! Hahahaha. Whoa. That is a staggering realization. So, my launch date for EpicLife Podcast is still Tuesday, March 18th. If that changes, I'll let you know one way or the other.
